Project Spotlight: Yard Drainage Fix in Charles Town, WV

This Charles Town back yard held water against the foundation after every storm, and erosion was cutting channels through what was left of the lawn.

Before and after: regraded yard and stone swale, Charles Town, WV

What we did

  • Regraded the yard to slope away from the foundation
  • Built a stone swale to carry water off the property
  • Repaired the eroded areas
  • Got the lawn re-established

Why newer lots hold water

This is a common problem around Charles Town. On newer lots, final grading is often done to get the house finished rather than to move water, and new development uphill can send more runoff your way than the ground used to handle.

Diagnose first

Standing water isn't always surface runoff. Sometimes it's a failing septic field, which is a different fix entirely. We figure out which it is before quoting.

Common questions

Will a swale look like a ditch?

A stone swale is shallow and follows the lay of the yard. Once the grass fills in around it, it reads as part of the landscape.

When should I call?

Right after a rain is ideal, because you can see exactly where the water sits and runs.
